Een nieuwe trend in de kunst is op dit moment: “kunst moet niet dienen tot iets anders”. De Hustinx-residency moet leiden tot een antwoord op de vraag “waar is kunst goed voor”?
De Amerikaanse kunstenaar Matt Mullican (1951, Santa Monica, Californië) is gefascineerd door symbolen, pictogrammen en taal. Zijn belangstelling betreft de wijze waarop de wereld aan de hand van deze tekens geordend wordt. Hij heeft ook zelf een eigen kosmologisch stelsel ontworpen dat vijf niveaus omvat: ‘physical elements’ (de zuivere materie), ‘world unframed’ (de wereld der dingen), ‘world framed’ (de wetenschappen, de kunsten), ‘language’ (de tekens en de taal) en ‘subjective meaning’ (de geestelijke activiteit).
Naast de werken met tekens heeft Mullican ook een grote reeks werken gemaakt ‘onder hypnose’. De hypnose is voor Mullican de ideale manier om zich te verplaatsen in denkbeeldige situaties, personen of zelfs voorwerpen. In zijn werk heeft Mullican meermaals werken gerealiseerd in de openbare ruimte. Hij is ook bijzonder geïnteresseerd in ‘de stad’. Met geavanceerde computertechnieken construeerde hij een virtuele stad: het City Project. De verwachting is dat Mullican inderdaad in staat is om ideeën te lanceren ‘op de schaal van de stad Maastricht’.
The American artist Matt Mullican (1951, Santa Monica, California, USA) is fascinated by symbols, pictograms and language. His interest concerns the way in which the world is arranged by means of these signs. He has devised also his own cosmological scheme that includes five levels: ‘physical elements’ (the pure matter), ‘world unframed' (the world of the things),’ world framed' (sciences, arts), ‘language’ (the signs and the language) and ‘subjective meaning’ (the mental activity). Beside the work with signs Mullican made also a large range work ‘under hypnosis’. In his work Mullican has often realized work in the public space. He has been also particularly interested in ‘the city’. With sophisticated computer techniques he constructed a virtual city: City project. The expectation is that Mullican will be able to launch ideas ‘on the scale of the city Maastricht’.
