Ronald Mensink wetenschap / science
Prof. dr R.P. Mensink is per 1 maart 2000 door de Stichting Zuivel Voeding en Gezondheid te Maarssen benoemd tot bijzonder hoogleraar Moleculaire voedingskunde met bijzondere aandacht voor het lipidenmetabolisme. Sinds 1990 is Ronald Mensink werkzaam bij de capaciteitsgroep Humane Biologie. Van 1992 tot 1997 had hij een fellowship van de Koninklijke Nederlandse Academie van Wetenschappen (KNAW). Ronald Mensink richt zich in zijn onderzoek vooral op de effecten van vetten in de voeding op risicofactoren voor hart- en vaatziekten. Dit onderzoek vindt plaats binnen het Maastrichtse universitaire onderzoeksinstituut Nutrim.
De jury voor de Edmond Hustinxprijs voor de Wetenschap 2000 was samengesteld uit de professoren A. Huson, G. Kootstra en J.A.M. Maarse.
Studies are in particular focussed on the effects of dietary lipids. Experiments are mainly carried out with human volunteers, but also with transgenic animals (apoE*3-Leiden mouse) and cell cultures (CaCo2-cells). Studies are designed not only to look at the effects, but - since the last 3 years - also to unravel the biochemical and molecular mechanisms, which underlie these effects. For this, experiments are carried out with stable isotopes to measure lipoprotein synthesis, fatty acid synthesis and oxidation, while molecular-biological techniques are used to measure gene-polymorphisms (apoE, apoA IV, CETP, and IRS-1), mRNA and/or protein expression of enzymes involved in lipid metabolism (HMGCoA-redctase, HMGCoA-synthase, LDL receptor, 7d-hydroxylase, SCP2 (Sterol Carrier Protein 2) and MDR2 (Multi Drug Resistance 2), D9- and D6-desaturases). Increasing attention is paid to the effects of diet on insulin-resistance and fatty acid oxidation.
