Open Call – Artist in Residence Maastricht University 2026

In 2026, Maastricht University will celebrate its 50th anniversary, and the Hustinx Foundation, established to promote the arts and sciences in Maastricht, will celebrate its 65th. That's why we're joining forces and offering two artists a unique opportunity to spend a month in residency at the university. We're looking for artists who are curious and eager to be inspired by the university's wide range of research. Whether you're interested in gravitational waves, macroeconomics, European culture, human rights, the workings of the brain, biochemistry, or one of UM's many other research areas, we're curious to see how you, as an artist, will incorporate this knowledge. Will you translate it into images, experiences, or perhaps even writing? All proposals are welcome; only two proposals that pique our curiosity and that we can match with a researcher will be selected for a residency and a presentation during the PAS Festival in September 2026.

Application deadline: February 1, 2026
Residency period: 10 working days between April and August 2026 (in consultation)
Location: Maastricht University

Open call UM X Hustinx Stichting 2026

About the residence

Artists from all disciplines, including musicians, theatre makers, visual artists, and writers, are invited to participate in a ten-week research residency at Maastricht University. The residency offers an environment where artistic and academic research intersect, fostering new forms of knowledge, imagination, and reflection.

During the residency, the artist has the opportunity to work within the university community, connect with researchers, students, and lecturers, and create new work inspired by a field within UM. The result may be a performance, intervention, presentation, installation, or other experimental format—appropriate to the nature of the research.

Purpose of the residency

  • stimulate cross-pollination between artistic and scientific practices;
  • provide space for developing or deepening the participant's artistic practice within a scientific context;
  • contributing to the visibility of art and artists within the university.

Who can register?

Professional artists interested in interdisciplinary research and dialogue with academics within a university. Experience with research-oriented work is a plus, but not required. To be eligible for this residency, you must live in Limburg or have demonstrable ties to Limburg.

What we offer

  • A match between your research proposal and scientists from one of the faculties, where we strive for knowledge exchange and access to scientific practice.
  • Guidance with the above and support with research and organisation of presentation moments;
  • A stipend of €3,000, including VAT.
  • A production budget of up to €1,000, including VAT.
  • The residency provides a work period, but not living space.

What we ask

  • A short proposal (max. 1,000 words) explaining the research idea, describing the connection between art and science, and presenting a schedule indicating how you intend to divide the period;
  • A CV and portfolio (max. 10 pages);
  • Proposal for collaboration with specific research groups, themes or faculties within Maastricht University (www.maastrichtuniversity.nl).
  • An initial idea for a result to be presented (for example artwork, performance, report or workshop) in one of the buildings of Maastricht University in the city center during the Pleasure, Art & Science Festival (www.pasmaastricht.nl) in the first weekend of September 2026. We assume you are available that weekend.

Selection procedure

A committee consisting of representatives from Maastricht University and the Hustinx Foundation will assess the submissions based on:

  • artistic quality;
  • relevance and originality of the research proposal;
  • potential for dialogue between art and science;
  • feasibility.
